The ultimate family holiday - bushveld & barefoot beach luxury

Highlights

  • Two worlds, one safari: Experience the contrast between Laikipia’s wide-open wilderness and the calm, salt-tinged air of the Indian Ocean.

  • Wildlife without crowds: Explore Laikipia’s private conservancies, tracking elephant, lion and reticulated giraffe in vast, uncrowded terrain.

  • Family freedom: Stay in relaxed, characterful spaces designed for shared adventure and downtime, with room to roam and breathe.

  • Effortless travel: Short scenic flights and private transfers keep travel light, linking bush and beach seamlessly.

  • Coastal rhythm: Swap game drives for snorkelling above coral gardens and dhow cruises, as Lamu’s timeless Swahili culture unfolds at your own pace.

Locations

  • Laikipia. A vast highland plateau of rolling hills and escarpments, Laikipia is a conservation frontier where elephants and predators share space with herders and rare northern species like reticulated giraffe and Grévy’s zebra. The sense of space and freedom here is unmatched.

  • Lamu Archipelago. Fringed by coral reefs and shaded by palms, Lamu is the essence of coastal tranquillity. Wooden dhows glide through turquoise channels, the scent of frangipani drifts on the air, and life slows to the rhythm of the tide. Between barefoot days on the beach and evenings under the stars, it’s the perfect counterpart to the bush.

Lodges

  • 5 nights at El Karama Lodge (Laikipia). An intimate, family-run lodge on a private conservancy overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. Hobbit House offers a whimsical, secluded space for families — stone curves, natural textures, and exceptional warmth in every detail.

  • 6 nights at Manda Bay (Lamu). Set along a quiet crescent of sand, this coastal retreat blends island simplicity with understated luxury. Days move easily between dhow sails, sea swims and golden-hour cocktails — a place made for connection and calm.

Timing

The best time to experience this bush-and-beach itinerary is from June to October and January to March, when Laikipia’s clear, dry days offer superb wildlife viewing and Lamu’s seas are calm, warm and crystalline. These months bring comfortable temperatures across both regions, ideal for families and active travellers.

The green season from November to December transforms the bush into a vivid landscape alive with newborn wildlife, while the coast feels fresh and sunlit after brief afternoon showers.

April and May bring the long rains inland and the windiest months at the coast — best avoided unless you prefer quiet travel and dramatic skies.
