The best of Namibia and Botswana

Highlights

  • Namib Desert immersion. Experience sunrise over towering dunes and the vast stillness of the world’s oldest desert.

  • Ocean–dune adventure. Travel by 4x4 along the dramatic Sandwich Harbour coastline, where dunes plunge into the Atlantic.

  • Damaraland landscapes & desert wildlife. Explore a region of granite outcrops, desert elephants and ancient geological formations.

  • Conservation encounters at Okonjima. Learn about leopard and brown hyena conservation efforts during guided drives in a private reserve setting.

  • Okavango Delta watery wonderland. Discover floodplains, channels and island forests alive with big cats, elephants and buffalo.

  • Chobe River finale. Watch huge elephant herds and diverse wildlife along one of Africa’s great river systems.

Locations

  • Sossusvlei. At the heart of the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei is a place of pure geometry and light. Vast red dunes, bleached clay pans and desert horizons that shift with every sunrise. Here, the silence is profound, the stars endless, and the sense of space is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

  • Swakopmund & Sandwich Harbour. A coastal town famed for German colonial architecture, long beaches, and desert-adapted plant and animal species. Expect adrenaline-pumping activities such as quad biking, skydiving, and sea kayaking. South of Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour is a wild sweep of coastline where ocean, salt pans and towering dunes collide.

  • Damaraland. The home of desert-adapted rhinos, elephants and lions and the largest gallery of prehistoric rock art in Southern Africa - etchings of people, wild animals and cattle.

  • Okonjima Nature Reserve. A wildlife reserve known for its hands-on conservation programmes and excellent wildlife viewing, set against the backdrop of the Omboroko Mountains.

  • Okavango Delta. An enormous watery oasis and Big 5 safari paradise, with seasonal islands and permanent lagoons providing refuge to an impressive concentration of wildlife.

  • Chobe River (Ngoma Area). A quiet, scenic section of the Chobe River with sweeping views of the floodplains and some of the highest elephant concentrations in Africa.

  • 2 nights at Ngoma Safari Lodge (Chobe Riverfront). A boutique lodge offering panoramic views over the game-rich floodplain and Chobe River.

Timing

The ideal time to experience this safari is during the dry winter months from June to October, when Namibia’s deserts are cool and clear, Sandwich Harbour access is reliable, and wildlife concentrations in both the Okavango Delta and Chobe River are at their peak. September and October can be warm to hot.

The green season, from November to April, brings lush scenery, newborn animals, and vibrant birdlife, a rewarding time for photography and quieter safaris. While mid-summer (December to February) can be hot and humid.

Safari tips

“Wild Delta”

Ross Exler, Botswana safari expert: “I’ve witnessed wild dogs take an impala and male lions fight for territory within the tents of Okavango Origins camp, which is located in the game-rich heart of the Okavango Delta. This is an authentic, old school camp for laid back safari moments”

Safari tips

“Moments"

Luis Gama, Namibia safari expert: “Namibia is about finding the desert-adapted wildlife like elephants, lions and black rhino. Among my favourite moments are spending hours on the dunes of Sossusvlei, searching the agonisingly beautiful red dunes and stark white dune valleys for oryx and springbok.”

Safari tips

“Slow down”

Ramona Cilliers, Namibia safari expert: “I love how Namibia's arid landscapes offer so much detail if you slow down and take it all in. I enjoy bird-watching while waiting in Damaraland's remote canyons for desert-adapted elephants and giraffes to drop by for a drink at an isolated seep."
