Journey to Kenya's stunning Tsavo and Amboseli to find the large-tusked elephants that define Africa's vast open landscapes.
In addition to spending time with these gentle giants, you will search for Tsavo's famous maneless lions, the bizarre gerenuk, the hirola (the world's rarest antelope) and a host of other species.
You will also watch hippos and crocodiles in a crystal-clear spring from a glass underwater chamber, sponsor orphaned elephants (optional), and you may even spot a rarely seen striped hyena!
Kenya’s super tuskers: Seek out some of Africa’s last large-tusked elephants, many with tusks that sweep the ground.
A host of other wildlife species, including the rest of the Big Five (leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino), cheetah, striped hyena, gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx and hirola (the world's rarest antelope).
Vast, uncrowded landscapes: Explore some of East Africa’s largest protected wilderness areas, with low tourism volumes.
Tsavo’s red-earth wilderness - Move through the river systems and hidden springs that sustain Tsavo’s great tuskers, with time at Mzima Springs and the different perspective of night drives.
Amboseli’s iconic setting - Elephant encounters framed by the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro
Private game viewing: A dedicated safari vehicle allowing flexibility and unhurried sightings
Voi Elephant Orphanage (optional experience): Foster an orphan elephant and watch the orphans return for milk feeds. Permission is required at least 10 days prior.
Tsavo East National Park is a vast expanse of red semi-desert and arid grassland savannas that stretch as far as the eye can see, bisected by the riverine vegetation and gorges of the Galana River. Wildlife highlights range from super tusker elephants and African wild dogs to maneless lions, gerenuk, hirola and 500 bird species – set within one of Kenya’s wildest, least-visited safari regions.
Tsavo West National Park features riverine vegetation and gorges of the Tsavo River, dramatic mountains, inselbergs, and sheer cliff faces. The crystal-clear Mzima Springs in the north of the park are a significant attraction for visitors, with a below-water-level glass viewing chamber to watch schools of fish, crocodiles, and resident hippos. Aside from super tusker elephants, visitors can search for lion, leopard, gerenuk, lesser kudu, fringe-eared oryx, Maasai giraffe and buffalo. Sightings of black rhinos are rare but rewarding, as are sightings of striped hyenas.
Amboseli National Park At the foot of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli’s sweeping plains and shimmering marshes host some of Africa’s most iconic elephant herds. The park’s open vistas and mirrored wetlands provide a photographer’s dream – where wildlife moves against the snow-dusted backdrop of the continent’s highest peak. In addition to super tuskers, visitors can also see lion, hyena, cheetah, leopard, hippo, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, Maasai giraffe, and gerenuk.
4 nights at Satao Camp (Tsavo East National Park). A classic tented camp with a strong sense of old-style safari, offering spacious canvas tents, attentive service and a front-row seat to Tsavo’s wildlife movements.
1 night at Severin Safari Camp (Tsavo West National Park). An established safari camp blending comfort and character, with well-spaced tents, landscaped grounds and a relaxed atmosphere.
3 nights at Elerai Camp (Amboseli border). An intimate, community-owned camp offering refined comfort, sweeping views toward Kilimanjaro and a strong emphasis on conservation and low-impact safari experiences.
Roger, United Kingdom: "Yet another fabulous trip arranged by Christian from Africa Geographic. This time to Kenya (Tsavo East, Amboseli and the Mara). The aim was to search for super tuskers and the endangered hirola in Tsavo and Amboseli. We came up trumps on both. The experience with one of the super tuskers was breathtaking; it came within touching distance! In addition, so many other amazing encounters with numerous animals and birds. Hundreds of weavers building nests was fantastic. The final day in Amboseli provided iconic shots of elephants with Kilimanjaro in the background. The Mara always provides surprises, and this trip didn't disappoint; great leopard, lion, serval and cheetah sightings. Thanks for a brilliant time, and I can't wait for the next trip in September!"
The ideal time for this safari is June to October and January to February, when dry conditions draw elephants to permanent water sources in both Tsavo and Amboseli, increasing the chances of outstanding tusker sightings and clear views across the plains.

Christian Boix, AG Kenya safari expert: "I’ve met super-tuskers in Tsavo and Amboseli on several occasions, and each time, I am reduced to an emotional state by these gentle giants. They’re roving cathedrals – bigger than imagined. This is an unforgettable pilgrimage."
Our community manager, Sarah Goodman, says, "The Super Tuskers of Tsavo are magnificent reminders of the importance of supporting those who protect them. I am so proud of the donations we make to Tsavo Trust that result from our safaris."
