Get to understand the spectacular Okavango Delta in this extended immersive safari

Highlights

  • Spectacular wildlife and safari activities: Enjoy the Okavango Delta's exceptional wildlife sightings while on game drives, bush walks and boat excursions. Take a serene mokoro excursion and a scenic helicopter flight above this watery wilderness.

  • Two sides of the Delta: Explore remote private concessions in the Okavango, each revealing a different expression of this remarkable ecosystem.

  • Mokoro excursions: Drift silently along clear, reed-fringed channels, and stumble upon frogs, fish, birds, and secretive wildlife species.

  • Aerial perspective: Take in breathtaking views as you fly by helicopter and aeroplane over channels, islands and floodplains.

  • Authentic camps: Stay in small, eco-conscious camps that combine genuine comfort with a true connection to nature.

Locations

  • The Okavango Delta is a verdant inland delta formed by the mighty Okavango River flowing into the Kalahari Desert, a unique ecosystem shaped by annual floodwaters from Angola and channels engineered by hippos and elephants. The lush Okavango Delta teems with diverse wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino), wild dog, cheetah, hippo and pangolin.

This safari explores two very remote areas of the Delta for an unfiltered thrill of big cat and wild dog action. Far from the crowds, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these concessions offer privacy and front-row seats to the greatest show on Earth.

Lodges & bush camps

  • 4 nights at Mokolwane (western Okavango Delta). Nestled among vegetable ivory palms and fig trees on the edge of a seasonal floodplain, Mokolwane is an intimate, elevated camp that captures the essence of raw, untamed Delta wilderness. Its simplicity, attentive guiding and light ecological footprint create a deep sense of connection to place.

  • 6 nights at Okavango Origins (northern Okavango Delta). Set beside a quiet lagoon in a remote area, Okavango Origins offers an old-school, authentic Delta experience. Canvas and timber suites open onto panoramic water views, with a focus on stillness, comfort and the natural theatre enveloping this bush camp.

Timing

The ideal time for this safari is from May to October, when the Okavango’s annual floods transform the Delta into a shimmering oasis alive with wildlife and birdlife. During these dry (no rain) winter months, animals congregate along the waterways and floodplains, making for exceptional game viewing.

From November to March, the summer rains bring emerald vegetation, newborn animals and vibrant skies — a quieter, more contemplative season that reveals the Delta’s softer side.

Safari tips

“Big-cat action”

Our destination expert, Nadia Lautenbach, says, “Mokolwane Camp is the base for 'Living With Leopards' (Netflix) and 'Big Cats 24/7' (BBC/PBS). Filmmaker Brad Bestelink chose this area for a reason—its extraordinary big-cat action plays out right around camp.”

Safari tips

“Signature safari”

Stefan Winterboer, AG Botswana safari expert: “Mokolwane excels in leopard-rich woodlands, while Origins sits in prime wild-dog territory. Together they offer distinct Delta habitats - a perfectly balanced Okavango experience.”

Safari tips

“Richer safari moments”

Benjamin Lederer, AG Botswana safari expert: “Amid unforgettable sightings, remember to lower your camera now and then to soak in the waterways, Mopane forests, red sunsets, and the distinct sounds of the bush. Every safari moment will become richer.”
