Gorongosa National Park is a spectacularly biodiverse ecosystem comprising acacia savannas, dry sand forests, wetlands, seasonal pans, and plateaus of miombo and montane forests. Mount Gorongosa is one of the park's most prominent features. The lion, hyena and wild dog populations are recovering well, and leopards are present but difficult to find. Elephants are regularly encountered, and the big bulls are generally reasonably relaxed. The park boasts healthy populations of hippo, oribi, warthog, sable, waterbuck, buffalo, kudu, and Lichtenstein's hartebeest. Gorongosa hosts over 450 bird species, including the green-headed oriole, white-chested alete, Swynnerton's robin, and East Coast akalat.
The islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, located on the Mozambique coast, are situated within a stunning marine protected area featuring four main islands with white sand beaches that dip gently into exquisite, azure-coloured waters and coral reefs that shelter an astonishing array of sea creatures. Bazaruto is one of the most valuable marine sanctuaries along the East African coastline, protecting six species of dolphins, over 2,000 species of fish, southern right and humpback whales, orcas (killer whales), 122 species of sharks and rays, and flamboyant nudibranchs, among other creatures. The most popular residents of the Bazaruto Archipelago with tourists are whale sharks, manta rays and dugongs.

Our destinations expert, Nadia Lautenbach, says: "On Benguerra Island, dip your hand into the ocean after dark and watch as bioluminescence glows green, turning the water into a field of stars."
Christian Boix, AG luxury safari expert: “While visiting Mount Gorongosa in the park, I marvelled at green-headed orioles, Stierling’s woodpeckers, and Nyassa seedcrackers and will never forget the spectacular 6000-strong waterbuck gathering on the floodplains.”
Our Community Manager, Sarah Goodman, says: "Gorongosa is one of a handful of places you can accompany a pangolin as it forages for food - and play your part in an important pangolin rewilding program."
