HANDCRAFTED EXPERIENTIAL SAFARIS

Trust us to find you the rarest animals, the most spectacular wildlife events, the remotest landscapes and deeply meaningful cultural encounters!

Why visit Mozambique?

With endless miles of white-sand beaches on its coastline and the islands of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos, Mozambique is a classic beach destination for honeymooners and families alike. Expect exclusivity, superb diving and snorkelling and seafood straight from the ocean. The Mozambique beach holiday is about toes-in-the-sand relaxation, beach dinners, sunset dhow cruises and cocktails.

And you can pair your Mozambique beach vacation with a Gorongosa bushveld safari, or South African reserves, such as Kruger, or even destinations further afield, in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania, for a bush and beach safari.

One of Africa’s best-kept secrets

Mozambique is a relatively recent entrant into the tourism industry, and many of its attractions offer exclusivity and a charming simplicity reminiscent of a bygone era.

Mozambique quick facts

  • 2,500km of coastline.

  • The capital city, Maputo, is renowned for its Art Deco architecture, vibrant music scene, and spicy peri-peri prawns.

  • It was a Portuguese colony for nearly 500 years; the influence is still evident in its architecture, language, and cuisine.

  • Bush & beach: Pair your Mozambique beach holiday with Gorongosa or any other Southern African safari destination. Click/tap the red button below to start the discussion.

What wildlife can I expect to see in Mozambique?

  • Gorongosa National Park hosts lion, hyena, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and very healthy populations of hippo, oribi, warthog, sable, waterbuck, kudu, and Lichtenstein's hartebeest.

  • The islands of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos offer the chance to many species of fish, dolphins, sharks and rays, southern right and humpback whales, orcas (killer whales), five species of turtle and flamboyant nudibranchs, among other creatures. The most popular residents of these areas are whale sharks, manta rays and dugongs.

Mozambique FAQs

Most travellers visit Mozambique for its beaches and therefore prefer the dry months of May through to September – the ideal time for soaking up the sun and diving in the clear waters. This is also a good time to visit Gorongosa National Park for a wildlife safari.

During the summer months - November to April - weather conditions are very hot and humid, especially along the north coast. Rainfall and overcast skies during these months are not ideal if you are looking to laze on the beach and soak up the sun.

From a sealife perspective, whale sharks can be found from October to March, and the first humpback whales arrive in July, with the stragglers departing around October.

All visitors to Mozambique require a passport valid for at least six months beyond their departure date and a visa (US$35-80, depending on nationality), except for citizens of South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. While visas are technically available at airports and border posts, savvy travellers secure theirs in advance from Mozambican embassies.

A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive in Mozambique from/via any yellow fever country unless you are in transit and do not leave the airport. All children must travel with their own individual passports.

Please get in touch with your local GP or travel clinic well before travel to obtain professional medical advice and discuss up-to-date vaccination requirements for the areas you visit.

Yellow fever

Mozambique is not a yellow fever country, and vaccination is not required.

Malaria

Malaria is prevalent in Mozambique, and we advise you to consult your GP before you depart about taking prophylaxis. It’s also essential to cover up in the evenings when the malaria-carrying Anopheles mosquito usually feeds. The malaria incubation period is 1-3 weeks, so if you experience any flu-like symptoms, headaches, aching joints and back or nausea and diarrhoea, it is recommended that you get tested at the earliest opportunity and let the medical personnel know you’ve recently travelled to Africa.

Cholera

Cholera is prevalent in Mozambique, but rarely affects travellers.

Other vaccines

Hepatitis A is advised for most travellers, as the virus can be contracted through contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B is recommended, especially if you might be exposed to blood or bodily fluids.

The Typhoid vaccine is suggested for travellers visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or staying with friends or relatives, because of the potential exposure to contaminated food or water.

The Rabies vaccination should be considered for travellers involved in outdoor activities that put them at risk for animal bites, such as camping, hiking, or caving, and for those working with or around animals.
