Phinda Private Game Reserve

Phinda sits in a low-risk malaria area, considerably lower risk than reserves in the Kruger lowveld. Guests should still consult a doctor for the latest guidance before travelling.

Federal Air offers daily scheduled flights direct from Nelspruit to Phinda's airstrip, while Airlink connects Johannesburg to Nelspruit daily. Private charters can be arranged from anywhere in South Africa. More cost-effective options include a commercial flight to Richards Bay followed by a two-hour road transfer, or a flight to Durban followed by a three-and-a-half-hour transfer. Self-drive routes take approximately seven hours from Johannesburg or three-and-a-half hours from Durban on good roads.

Phinda is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), alongside more than 430 bird species. It is particularly known for close-up cheetah and black rhino sightings, and its rare sand forest habitat shelters the shy suni and red duiker.

Wildlife viewing and climate at Phinda are excellent year-round. Summers, from September to April, are hot, humid and wet, while winters, from May to August, are warmer to cool and dry.

Phinda Mountain Lodge, Forest Lodge, Zuka Lodge and Homestead all welcome children and offer the WILDchild programme. Rock Lodge and Vlei Lodge do not accept children under 12 due to their cliffside and secluded settings.

Children of all ages are welcome on game drives at ranger's discretion when staying in a Family Suite or Family Cottage at family-friendly lodges. Walks outside the lodge are reserved for guests aged 16 and above.

Phinda was created in 1991 on former pineapple, cattle and sisal farmland, the first private game reserve established in KwaZulu-Natal. Wildlife including lion, elephant, cheetah and rhino was reintroduced over subsequent years, and the reserve has since grown from its original 13,076 hectares to nearly 30,000 hectares through partnership with the Munywana Conservancy.
