Established in July 2004 by hotelier Trevor Lombard and wildlife enthusiast Dale Howarth, Pumba occupies the remainder of the historic Cariega farmland, once home to 1820 English Settlers, and has been steadily restoring indigenous fauna that had been absent from this stretch of the Eastern Cape since 1825.
The reserve is best known for its free-roaming pride of white lions living naturally alongside tawny lions, a genuine rarity found nowhere else in the region. Beyond the Big 5, giraffes, hippos, spotted hyenas, cheetahs and numerous antelope species roam the valley bushveld and over 300 bird species are recorded.
