What wildlife can I see in Marataba?
The Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, white and black rhino, and buffalo thrive in Marataba's malaria-free, privately managed concession.
Cheetah and wild dog (painted wolf): range through the concession. Sightings are less predictable than the Big Five but rank among the most thrilling encounters.
Pangolin: recorded more often at Marataba than most South African reserves, making it one of the best places to encounter this elusive species.
Other species include hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland, kudu, duiker, sable antelope, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer and bat-eared fox.
Over 272 bird species, including Cape vulture, Gurney’s sugarbird, Verreaux’s and martial eagles, African finfoot, half-collared kingfisher, white-backed night heron, black stork, Denham’s bustard and white-bellied korhaan.
Where to stay in Marataba
Marataba Safari Lodge is the larger, family-focused option. Its 15 canvas-and-stone tented suites sit on raised wooden decks overlooking the Waterberg plains. Four Family Luxury Tents include a connected children's room for up to two young guests. Facilities include a swimming pool, restaurant, outdoor boma, Wi-Fi in public areas, and in-suite spa treatments. The Creative Lab is a distinctive feature, where specialist photographers help guests capture and process wildlife images, with canvas printing available. Children aged six and older are welcome on game drives and other safari activities, while the Mack & Madi Kids' Adventure Safari Club offers dedicated bush activities for younger guests.
Marataba Mountain Lodge offers a more intimate experience. Five private, fully solar-powered eco-suites are elevated on a steep mountainside, with sweeping views across Waterfall Valley and the Waterberg Escarpment. Suites feature king-sized beds, wood-burning fireplaces, en-suite rain showers with valley views, and shaded private decks. There are no televisions – the design deliberately draws attention to the wilderness outside. Facilities include a guest pool, while evening boma dinners and open-fire cooking are a highlight. Mountain Lodge is exclusively for guests aged 16 and over, and its steep, rocky access makes it unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.
Both lodges offer an overnight at the Thabametsi Treehouse, an en-suite sleep-out platform for two adults and up to two children aged 6 to 15, subject to availability and weather conditions.

Safari Lodge is the larger, family-friendly property with 15 tented suites, a children's programme, and a Creative Lab photography studio. It welcomes children of all ages on game drives from age six. Mountain Lodge is a smaller, more private retreat with only five eco-suites set on an elevated mountainside. It is designed exclusively for guests aged 16 and over, prioritises solitude and sustainability, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

May to September, the dry season, is the prime period for wildlife viewing. Vegetation is lower, animals concentrate around permanent water sources, and cooler temperatures make game drives comfortable. Summer (October to April) brings lush green landscapes, vibrant birdlife, and the arrival of migratory species, but rainfall can make some roads hard to access.
Both lodges offer guided walking safaris led by qualified field guides. Walks explore the Waterberg bushveld at ground level - tracking spoor, identifying plants and birds, and experiencing the landscape away from the vehicle. The terrain varies from open plains to rocky mountain slopes.
