Trust us to find you the rarest animals, the most spectacular wildlife events, the remotest landscapes and deeply meaningful cultural encounters!
Game drives are the quintessential African bushveld safari experience. No matter where you are on this great continent, the expectation and thrill of heading out in the game drive vehicle in the early morning and late afternoon define your safari day.
Your guide (and sometimes a tracker) will read the 'bush news' as you go—the many signs of wildlife presence—to ensure interesting and sometimes breathtaking wildlife encounters. No game drive is ever the same, so expect the unexpected. Your guide will be on the lookout for the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo), if they are present in the area, as well as interesting species such as giraffe, zebra, and hippopotamus, and a variety of smaller mammals, birds, snakes, and insects.
Yes, you are perfectly safe in the hands of the experienced guides at the lodges we include in our safaris. Animals become accustomed to game drive vehicles and do not view them as a threat, so even though you will be near dangerous animals, you will be safe. Your guide will brief you on safety protocols, such as not standing up in the vehicle near animals and avoiding excessive noise. Your guide will steer clear of dangerous animals that appear stressed or are likely to behave aggressively. Being so close to wild animals is an exhilarating experience that will have you returning for more.
Game drives typically last for four to five hours in the morning and two to three hours in the late afternoon to evening, although you may stay out longer if the wildlife encounters are too good to miss out on. Some lodges offer all-day game drives, where you can enjoy a packed lunch out in the bushveld. Night drives with spotlights are also offered by some lodges outside national parks.
