The Spice Islands - Zanzibar (Unguja), Pemba, Mafia and a host of smaller associated islands serve as beach retreats and watersports havens for all budgets and privacy expectations.
The name alone conjures up romantic images of spice markets, palm-fringed white-sand beaches and ancient dhows on a calm turquoise sea – and happily, the reality doesn’t disappoint. Only a short distance from the Tanzania coast, but at the crossroads of ancient trade routes between Africa, the Middle East and Asia, Zanzibar offers a cultural sensory experience of note.
On the largest island - Zanzibar (or Unguja) - go on spice tours, taste local dishes and walk the cobbled streets of the capital’s old quarter - Stone Town. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town buzzes with colourful back-street markets and local flavours, its labyrinth of coralline ragstone and mangrove timber architecture harking back to its former life as a Swahili trading port. And then, of course, there are the Zanzibar beaches - ideal for anyone yearning for a lazy, luxurious beach vacation. Zanzibar also offers rocky shores with private jetties and the coastal mangrove forest of Jozani Forest Reserve.
Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia and many smaller outlying islands are home to some of the finest beaches in East Africa and several of its best dive sites. They are also ideal as bush-and-beach safari combos with Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Ruaha and Katavi.
Zanzibar beaches: Zanzibar (Unguja) is home to some of East Africa’s most idyllic beaches, with powder-soft white sand and warm, clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkelling, dhow excursions, or simply chilling in a hammock with a book and favourite beverage in hand.
Stone Town: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is a cultural highlight, with narrow streets, carved wooden doors, and coral-stone buildings reflecting centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian influence.
Diving and snorkelling: The archipelago offers exceptional marine experiences, from the coral reefs of Zanzibar to the pristine, less-visited waters around Pemba and Mafia, where vibrant fish life and healthy reef systems thrive.
Mafia Island marine safaris: Mafia Island is known for its protected marine park and seasonal whale shark encounters, offering one of the most rewarding and responsible marine experiences in the region.
Spice tours: The islands’ identity is rooted in spice production, with guided tours offering insight into cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla for a sensory journey through the region’s history and flavours.
Located just off the coast of mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, the Spice Islands form an archipelago that includes Zanzibar (Unguja), Pemba, and Mafia, along with several smaller surrounding islands.
Zanzibar lies closest to the mainland and is the most developed, while Pemba sits further north, characterised by its lush vegetation and more remote feel. Mafia Island, to the south, is known for its protected marine park and exceptional diving opportunities.
The islands are fringed by coral reefs and warm, shallow waters, creating ideal conditions for marine biodiversity. Historically positioned along major trade routes, the archipelago has long been a meeting point of cultures. Today, it offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural depth, making it a compelling extension to a mainland East African safari.
We also provide a deeper dive into the three islands.
The all-rounder. Best for: Culture lovers, beach holiday makers, first-time visitors, honeymooners, and those who want variety.
Diving & nature lovers' paradise. Best for: Divers, nature lovers, off-the-beaten-path adventurers, and those wanting solitude with some luxury.
Marine wilderness. Best for: Marine wildlife enthusiasts, eco-travellers, serious divers, and those seeking the ultimate "off-grid" escape.
Whale sharks visit Mafia Island seasonally between October and March, offering rare encounters with the world's largest fish, and dolphins can be frequently spotted along the coastline, often seen in playful pods.
Reef sharks inhabit deeper reef systems, adding to the diversity of marine life, while rays are graceful swimmers found in sandy seabeds and reef channels, and octopuses are well-camouflaged residents of coral reefs and rocky crevices.
Tropical fish are abundant across coral reefs, creating vibrant underwater ecosystems ideal for snorkelling and diving while sea turtles glide through the warm coastal waters around the islands.
Red colobus monkeys are endemic to Zanzibar’s Jozani Forest. These endangered and fascinating creatures are renowned for their distinctive appearance.
Birdlife is a highlight across the archipelago, with over 200 species recorded. Zanzibar's Jozani Forest is home to the striking Fischer's turaco, mangrove kingfisher, East Coast akalat and Zanzibar red bishop. Pemba Island is a birder's prize destination, sheltering four species found nowhere else on Earth: the Pemba sunbird, Pemba scops owl, Pemba green pigeon and Pemba white-eye.
The Spice Islands offer a wide range of accommodation, from boutique beachfront lodges and private island retreats to larger resorts along Zanzibar’s coastline. Many properties are positioned directly on the beach, providing easy access to swimming, snorkelling and dhow excursions.
More remote islands such as Pemba and Mafia offer smaller, more exclusive lodges focused on diving and marine experiences, often with a strong emphasis on conservation and privacy. Whether seeking a romantic escape, a family-friendly resort or a secluded barefoot luxury experience, the islands cater to a variety of travel styles.

Why choose Africa Geographic to plan your safari?
Our visit to Chole Mjini treehouses on Chole Island was also wonderful. Such a remote part of the world, and staying in a 'real luxury' tree house built into the baobab was a once-in-a-lifetime experience too. All the staff here were excellent and very friendly indeed. Thank you very much.
We have booked with this company for 3 years now ... While we are away, they are easy to contact if there is a query and promptly answer. Places we stay are small and less touristy. Activities vary to suit 5 very individual people, yet the itineraries always work perfectly. You can trust that you will have a great holiday if you book with Africa Geographic Travel.
We had another amazing experience with Africa Geographic. In Zanzibar, Christian helped us to organise some very down-to-earth cultural excursions, which will be strong family memories forever! We loved biking through the villages, learning how to climb coconut palm trees, meeting and chatting with local kids, and we adored our Swahili cooking lesson!
The Spice Islands stand out for their combination of idyllic beaches, rich Swahili culture and exceptional marine environments. Positioned along historic trade routes, they offer a unique blend of African, Arab, and Asian influences, alongside some of East Africa’s best snorkelling and diving. The result is a destination that balances relaxation with cultural and natural discovery.
Each island suits a different travel style. Zanzibar (Unguja) is larger and the most developed, with a wide range of accommodation, beaches and the cultural hub of Stone Town. Pemba is the "Green Island" – lush, quiet and home to world-class diving around its steep coral walls. Mafia is the most remote, centred on its protected marine park and seasonal whale shark encounters. Most visitors to Zanzibar will never reach Pemba or Mafia, making both significantly quieter and more exclusive.
We also provide a deeper dive into the three islands.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to October and from December to February, when conditions are warm and ideal for beach activities and diving. The long rains typically occur from March to May, while shorter rains may fall in November, although these are often brief and less disruptive.
Most visitors combine the islands with a Tanzania safari extension. A minimum of four nights allows time for Stone Town, a spice tour and beach time on Zanzibar. Dedicated divers planning a Pemba or Mafia trip typically allow for 5 to 7 nights. If you want to visit two or more islands, seven to ten nights is recommended to avoid rushed transfers.
Activities range from snorkelling and scuba diving on coral reefs to dhow cruises, spice tours, and guided walks through Stone Town. Visitors can also explore mangroves, enjoy marine safaris on Mafia Island, or simply relax on the beaches. The islands offer a balance of adventure and laid-back coastal experiences.
Zanzibar is consistently ranked among East Africa's top honeymoon destinations. The combination of private beach lodges, dhow cruises, sunset dinners and some of the Indian Ocean's most photogenic beaches makes it well suited to couples. Mnemba Island (private, adult-focused) and several small boutique properties on the north and east coast are particularly popular with honeymooners. Pemba and Mafia offer even greater seclusion for those wanting a more private experience.
Yes, the Spice Islands are one of the most popular extensions to a Tanzania safari. (bush and beach). Their proximity to the mainland makes them easily accessible, and they provide a contrasting experience, shifting from wildlife-rich savannahs to tranquil beaches and ocean-based activities.
The islands are accessible by air from major Tanzanian hubs such as Dar es Salaam and Arusha, with regular flights to Zanzibar and connections to Pemba and Mafia. Zanzibar also has an international airport with direct regional and some long-haul connections, making it a convenient entry or exit point for East African itineraries.
