The Great Karoo demands a particular kind of attention. Vast and semi-arid, this sweeping Eastern Cape malaria-free landscape reveals its character slowly - in the quality of its silence, in the cold clarity of a winter dawn, in a cheetah's fresh tracks across red clay. Samara Karoo Reserve represents one of Africa's most compelling rewilding stories.
Founded in 1997 by Sarah and Mark Tompkins, Samara assembled eleven former livestock farms across 27,000 hectares. Fences came down, overgrazing gave way to rest, and a sustained reintroduction programme followed. Cheetah returned in 2004 - the first in the Great Karoo in 130 years. Desert-adapted black rhino arrived in 2013, elephants returned in 2017 after a 150-year absence, and lions were released in 2019, making Samara the first Big 5 private reserve in the Great Karoo.
Today the reserve spans five of South Africa's nine vegetation biomes and supports over 60 mammal species and 225 bird species. It sits at the centre of an ambitious ecological vision: a corridor linking Camdeboo National Park in the west with Mountain Zebra National Park in the east. Every guest who travels here becomes a co-creator of that living legacy.
Rewilding in action: One of Africa's most ambitious conservation projects — a malaria-free Big 5 reserve built from eleven reclaimed farmlands across 27,000 Great Karoo hectares.
Cheetah on foot: Track cheetah on foot with specialist guides. Samara's resident cheetah population includes descendants of Sibella, the reserve's founding female.
Desert-adapted black rhino: The desert-adapted black rhino subspecies was reintroduced in 2013 - one of only a handful of private South African reserves to have done so.
The star bed: Sleep beneath a galaxy of stars on Samara's raised wilderness platform above the Milk River; available October to April, under open skies.
Location and access: Combines effortlessly with Cape Town or the Garden Route for a complete Southern African journey - just 2h30 by road from Port Elizabeth's airport.
Game drives: Expert guides lead game drives to track lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, and cheetahs across varied Karoo terrain.
Cheetah tracking on foot: Track cheetahs on foot with specialist guides for an intimate encounter with one of Africa's most charismatic and formidable predators.
Guided bush walks: Guided morning bush walks at Plains Camp bring the semi-arid ecosystem to life: animal tracks, flowering Karoo plants, beetles and ostrich nests.
Aardvark spotting: In winter, the usually nocturnal aardvark emerges in daylight to forage, a remarkable and much sought-after Samara sighting.
Rock art hikes: Guided hikes to ancient San rock art sites offer a layered cultural encounter with the Karoo's deep human history and earliest inhabitants.
The star bed: Spend a night on Samara's raised wilderness platform above the Milk River; available October to April, for open-sky stargazing in solitude.
The Big Five: Lion, elephant, leopard, white rhino, desert-adapted black rhino and buffalo all roam Samara's rewilded Great Karoo landscape.
Cheetah: Resident cheetahs are regularly sighted and can be tracked on foot, one of the finest cheetah encounter experiences anywhere in South Africa.
Plains antelope and megaherbivores: Giraffe, oryx, springbok, eland, red hartebeest, black wildebeest and Cape mountain zebra regularly move across the open plains in impressive numbers.
Karoo specialists: Samara's more than 60 recorded mammal species include the aardvark, conspicuous in winter daylight, along with the black-footed cat and bat-eared fox.
Birds: 225 recorded species include blue crane, Cape vulture, Ludwig's bustard, Cape longclaw, olive bushshrike, black-headed canary and Karoo endemics - Karoo korhaan, Karoo long-billed lark and more.
Leopard: Leopards have returned naturally to Samara and have been confirmed through camera trap monitoring, a thrilling presence on every game drive.
Karoo Lodge is where the Samara story began. This lovingly reimagined farmstead is encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains and grounded in the soulfulness of the Great Karoo. The farmstead features Karoo antiques and contemporary South African craftsmanship and offers a wraparound verandah, farm-style kitchen, wine cellar, atmospheric library and a Story Room that documents the reserve's rewilding journey from inception to the present day. A swimming pool, gift shop and indigenous garden complete the picture.
The Manor is reserved exclusively for groups of up to eight guests across four spacious en-suite suites, each opening onto a private patio with views of the surrounding mountain landscape. Glass doors frame the 21-metre infinity pool at the heart of the villa; inside, Karoo antiques and beaded African artwork create an atmosphere of understated contemporary elegance. Two living areas and two breakaway lounge alcoves give guests space to gather or retreat as the mood dictates. A private vehicle, dedicated field guide, tracker, chef and host are included for the duration, making The Manor the ideal choice for families or groups who want a fully private, tailor-made Karoo safari.
Plains Camp sits in a remote corner of the reserve, with spellbinding views across open plains to dolerite-capped mountains. Designed to touch the landscape lightly, this off-grid tented camp runs entirely without electricity - candlelight, oil lanterns and open-air bucket showers define its character.

Samara is the Great Karoo's only Big 5 private reserve - and one of the very few places in Southern Africa where you can track cheetah on foot, spot the critically endangered desert-adapted black rhino subspecies, and watch lions roam a landscape that was bare farmland less than three decades ago. The scale of the rewilding, the quality of the guides and the intimacy of the guest experience set it apart from more conventional Big 5 reserves.
Yes. Samara is entirely malaria-free, making it an excellent choice for families with children of all ages, travellers who prefer not to take prophylactics, or anyone combining the reserve with Cape Town or the Garden Route as part of a broader South African itinerary.
Samara is open year-round and rewarding in every season. Winter (June–August) offers the best wildlife viewing: herds of zebra, springbok and buffalo converge on the plains, and the aardvark, usually nocturnal, can be spotted foraging in broad daylight. Summer (December–February) is ideal for the star bed, fly camping and spectacular storm photography. The transition months of spring and autumn bring mild temperatures, new wildlife births and blooming Karoo bossies.
The Great Karoo is a vast semi-desert covering roughly 40% of South Africa's land surface, spanning the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State and Western Cape provinces. Defined by its low rainfall, open plains, dolerite-capped mountains and extraordinary biodiversity, it is internationally renowned in palaeontological circles for its fossil-bearing beds - including fossil records from both the end-Permian and end-Triassic extinction events. It was also once the site of the largest land-based migration in Africa, when springbok traversed the plains in their millions.
Yes. All ages are welcome at both Karoo Lodge and The Manor. Samara offers a dedicated Kids Programme for children up to 12 years old. Plains Camp is recommended for older children and adults, given its focus on walking safaris and its off-grid, no-electricity setting.
Since 1997, Samara has systematically assembled eleven former livestock farms, removed internal fencing, cleared alien invasive plants and reintroduced species that had been locally extinct for generations. Key milestones include the first cheetah in the Karoo in 130 years (2004), desert-adapted black rhino (2013), the first elephant herd in 150 years (2017) and the founding lion pride (2019). Leopards have since returned naturally. The reserve now supports over 60 mammal species and is home to the Big Five.
The nearest major airport is Chief Dawid Stuurman International in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), served by daily commercial flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. From Port Elizabeth, guests can reach Samara by hired car, road transfer (approximately 2h30) or private charter flight directly to Samara's on-site airstrip. Charter flights operate from Cape Town (approximately 1h35), Johannesburg (approximately 1h50), George (approximately 45 minutes) and Port Elizabeth (approximately 35 minutes). Samara also partners with Air Du Cap for air transfers from Port Elizabeth aboard the Beechcraft Baron 58.
We recommend at least four nights to experience the full breadth of what Samara offers — game drives across different terrain, a cheetah tracking session, bush walks, and an aardvark evening. Longer stays of six or seven nights let guests split their time between two lodges. For example, combining the sociable character of Karoo Lodge with the off-grid solitude of Plains Camp.
Samara has three lodges. Karoo Lodge is the original farmstead homestead with eight Karoo Suites and two Family Suites - the most sociable option. The Manor is a four-suite contemporary villa, booked exclusively for up to eight guests, with a 21-metre infinity pool and a private guide, chef and host. Plains Camp is an off-grid tented eco-camp in a remote part of the reserve, centred on walking safaris, with four deluxe tents and a plunge pool.
Samara is home to the Big Five - lion, elephant, leopard, white rhino and the desert-adapted black rhino subspecies- alongside buffalo. Cheetahs are regularly sighted and trackable on foot. Other residents include giraffe, eland, springbok, oryx, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, Cape mountain zebra and aardvark. Researchers have recorded 225 bird species, including blue crane, Cape vulture, and Ludwig's bustard, along with a suite of Karoo endemics.
Activities include morning and afternoon game drives across 27,000 hectares, cheetah tracking on foot, guided bush walks (particularly at Plains Camp), aardvark spotting in winter, hiking to ancient San rock art sites, wilderness picnics, birding, and the star bed experience (October to April). Children can participate in Samara's Kids Programme.
Every booking at Samara directly funds the reserve's ongoing rewilding programme — one of the most ambitious in southern Africa. By booking through Africa Geographic, guests additionally support conservation publishing and ground-level conservation projects funded through a portion of every safari sold. Samara is also a member of Pack for a Purpose, enabling travellers to bring supplies for supported community projects.
