Moremi (Okavango Delta)

Khwai Community Concession

Savute and Chobe riverfront.

The mobile tented camp features an open kitchen, a covered mess/dining area, a campfire hearth and a set of comfortable walk-in Meru-style tents with canvas floors. All windows and entrances have mosquito gauze.

The cot beds are comfortable, with bed linen and fleece blankets. Each tent has amenities such as soap, shampoo, toilet paper, mosquito repellent, torch, outside paraffin lamp and a bassinet to wash your hands or splash your face.

Hot or cold water for your shower is provided on request to your en-suite shower, ready for you on your return from your safari. These are gravity showers with an easy-to-use showerhead. Towels are supplied. Your en-suite area includes a ‘bush toilet’ or ‘long drop’ with comfortable seated thrones.

All meals are cooked in camp by the resident chef. A cooler box with ice and an assortment of cool drinks, wines and beers is available. Comfortable camping chairs surrounding the campfire are an enticement to relax as you share bush stories.

Game drives and local transfers are carried in custom-made open game drive vehicles with a shade roof. Seating is provided in game viewing seats (not benches), and vehicles are equipped with long-range fuel tanks. Your game drive vehicle is always supplied with water, cool drinks, coffee, tea, biscuits, blankets, and ponchos. Some drives on the roads connecting the parks may be long and bumpy.

Each group will contain a maximum of 7 guests, and you will share this safari with others in your group.

Itinerary

Maun-Kasane or vice versa

“Dumela / Hello! And welcome to Botswana!”

Once you have landed in Maun, an Africa Geographic representative will meet you at the arrivals hall of Maun Airport – holding a name board with your names displayed. Arrivals from Johannesburg generally land in Maun at about midday. Other participants already in Botswana will need to gather at the airport in Maun, and once the entire group is present, the tour will commence. Departure time is usually at about 13h00. Everyone will be notified before the start of this tour where and when they are expected to meet with the rest of the group.

You will be provided with a snack pack before being handed over to our pilot, who will whisk you away in a light aircraft for a stunning scenic flight over the Okavango Delta and Chief’s Island. This flight promises to deliver an unforgettable eagle’s eye view of the Delta. Before you know it, you will descend and land in Moremi Game Reserve, having saved yourself a three to four-hour dusty road transfer. As soon as you emerge from your aircraft, our ground team will be there to collect you and take you to your mobile tented camp – enjoying game viewing en route to camp.

Arrival at your camp will likely be before sunset and in good time for a chilled sundowner while you put your feet up around the fire and begin the process of ridding your body of stress and soaking up the scents and sounds of Africa. Your bags will be taken to your tent while your delicious dinner is cooked over an open fire, and your guide delivers an essential camp safety briefing. Remember that your camp is not fenced, and dangerous wildlife may walk through the camp at any time of day or night.

Overnight at Moremi Mobile Tented Camp

Your day will be spent exploring the Xaxanaka/3rd Bridge areas of Moremi in your game drive vehicle, during the cool mornings and late afternoons.

While on game drives your guide will use his experience, keen eyesight and understanding of the area to show you as much as he can. He will especially be on the lookout for lions, leopards, elephants, wild dogs, cheetahs, hyenas and honey badgers. It is important to appreciate that sightings cannot be guaranteed, as wildlife movements are subject to many influences, and there is always a degree of luck in successful wildlife sightings.

During the heat of the day you will be back at camp to enjoy a light lunch, siesta, or downtime to download and edit your images, or read a book. As soon as the heat starts to die down you will head out for an afternoon game drive. Expect to be back in the early evening after your sundowner, and to a welcoming camp fire, delicious meal and a night sky packed with stars.

Overnight at Moremi Mobile Tented Camp

Shortly after breakfast you will head out for a full day in the bushveld while the team takes down and relocates your private camp from Moremi to the Khwai/east Moremi area of the Okavango Delta. Your transfer will be a slow and enjoyable game viewing drive with a stop en-route to enjoy a picnic lunch.

You will spend the next three nights at your campsite in Khwai, exploring the floodplains and riverine woodlands on game drives. You will also experience a mokoro (traditional canoe) outing, exploring the Khwai River channels – the easternmost reach of the Okavango river system.

Overnight at Khwai Mobile Tented Camp

These two days will be spent exploring the Khwai area on game drives during the cool mornings and afternoons, and on the mokoro outing which will be scheduled for one of these days. Again your guide will use all of his skills and experience to show you as much as he can of the local wildlife species, and what you see is subject to wildlife movements.

During the heat of the day you will again spend time in camp and your time after the afternoon game drive is spent around the fire.

Overnight at Khwai Mobile Tented Camp

Today you head further north towards Chobe National Park, where you will spend three nights camping in a wilderness campsite in Savute. The Savute channel and marsh dried up for 30 years due to a shift in tectonic plates that prevented flood waters from reaching this far. But in 2010, everything changed when the floodwaters again found their way to this parched land, and since then, the annual floodwaters have reinvigorated this remote area.

Savute is a dynamic wilderness that offers a sweeping expanse of savannah dotted by several rocky outcrops, which guard a relic marsh and the mostly dry channel that was once its lifeline. The Savute goes through wet and dry cycles, with wild dogs hunting in the dry river channel where crocodiles once lurked. Visitors to this spectacular area can also enjoy great sightings of large herds of elephants and buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, various antelope species, as well as thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest.

Overnight at Savute Wilderness Campsite

Each day's programme will be discussed the previous night with your guides, who will again keep track of game movements and use their experience of Savute and knowledge of predators to create the best possible strategy for each game viewing outing.

Every morning you will be up early to maximise on those prime game-viewing early hours, before returning to camp for a hearty brunch. In the early afternoon, you will head back out to Savute marsh for some more game viewing.

In addition to its wealth of predators, Savute also offers a chance to enjoy the legacy of its previous human residents. Rising out of the Savute plains are a number of rocky outcrops, including the well-known "Bushman Hill" where you will be able to find unique San rock art. The paintings depict a number of species that shared the area with Botswana's original people, including eland, elephant, sable, giraffe, hippo and the infamous puff adder.

At the end of each day you will head back to camp for a well-deserved hot shower and a sumptuous three-course dinner under the stars, and to discuss the day as well as plan ahead for the next one.

Overnight at Savute Wilderness Campsite

Leaving Savute, you continue your journey north towards the Chobe region of the park, where you can expect stunning African teak broad-leaved woodlands that fringe on lush riverine vegetation. You will spend the last two nights camping in a wilderness campsite near the Chobe River, and exploring the busy Chobe riverbank and surrounding flood plains.

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park, renowned for its diverse and abundant game viewing opportunities. This section of the park is best known for its dense concentration of wildlife including large herds of elephants and pods of hippos – but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them. Visitors can look forward to some exciting activities such as driving along the game-dotted river banks in a 4x4 vehicle and cruising along the river in a motorboat.

Overnight at Chobe River Wilderness Campsite

After breakfast, and a short morning game drive, your safari will come to an end and you will be transferred to Kasane. Here you will have the chance to bid your group and guide farewell and continue with your journey or catch your flight back home.
