Liuwa's seemingly boundless horizon reminds us of East Africa's most renowned safari destinations – MINUS THE CROWDS

Highlights

  • Encounter Busanga’s powerful lion dynamics and Liuwa’s impressive hyena clans amid wide, open landscapes. Thanks to iconic Lady Liuwa – the "Last Lioness" made famous by filmmaker Herbert Brauer - the growing lion population is relaxed around vehicles.

  • Enjoy exclusive, big-game encounters in vast open plains with remarkably few other vehicles — a rare level of space and privacy.

  • Liuwa's vast open plains remind us of East Africa's most renowned safari destinations – without the crowds. You could spend an entire day exploring and not see another tourist.

  • Travel with your own private and professional guide throughout the journey, adding insight and depth to the experience.

  •  Stay in intimate, authentic bush camps that offer warm hospitality, attentive service, and a strong connection to their surroundings.

Locations and lodges

  • Busanga Plains is a seasonal wetland in northern Kafue known for its vast, treeless plains, rising morning mist, large herds of red lechwe and some of Zambia’s strongest concentrations of lion, cheetah and buffalo. Busanga is one of Africa’s most atmospheric wildlife arenas, accessible only during the dry months.

  • Liuwa Plain National Park is a remote, wind-swept grassland stretching to the horizon, shaped by weather, light and seasonal movement. Home to Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration, strong hyena populations and rare predators, Liuwa offers a powerful sense of openness and solitude.

  • 2 nights at Wild Dogs Lodge: A leafy, welcoming lodge on the outskirts of Lusaka, offering comfortable rooms, peaceful gardens and warm hospitality — an easy base on your journey.

  • 3 nights at Kasonso Busanga Camp: A characterful tented camp set on the edge of the open plains, with canvas rooms, attentive hosting and wide views across grasslands.

  • 1 night at Liseli Guest House: A friendly, convenient guesthouse near Mongu, offering comfortable rooms and a calm setting.

  • 5 nights at Luiwa Camp: A well-run safari camp in the heart of Liuwa, with spacious tents, welcoming staff and sweeping views across the open plains.

Timing

The best time to travel is July to November, when the Busanga Plains are accessible, Liuwa’s roads are passable, and wildlife densities are at their best.

  • May to July: Birds feast on fish as the water recedes. Large flocks of cranes are abundant, making this the best time to photograph bird life. Lechwes start to move down to the wetlands. Large herds of wildebeest congregate outside the park, from Luola to Mushukula.

  • August to October: the dry season. Bird life is still abundant - especially at large fishing pools. Vegetation dries up, and trees drop their leaves. A large number of wildebeest return to the park through the northern corridor and congregate with other wildlife in the north.

  • November to December: This is the start of the rainy season – preceded by heavy cloud cover, thunderstorms and lightning. Flowers and green grass cover the park, and the wildebeest start arriving in large numbers and calving. This is Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration, and the predators feast on the spoils.
