Why visit Kahuzi-Biega?

Kahuzi-Biega National Park offers gorilla trekking to see the world's largest gorilla - Grauer's gorilla, also known as the eastern lowland gorilla

Kahuzi-Biega's stunning landscapes

Kahuzi-Biega National Park, located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park spans the Albertine Rift and Congo Basin, encompassing a diverse range of ecosystems, including dense rainforests, swamps, and mountainous regions.

Extending over 600,000 hectares near Rwanda and the western bank of Lake Kivu, Kahuzi-Biega straddles two volcanic mountains - Mounts Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Biega (2,790 m).

Gorillas and other wildlife

The park has a greater diversity of mammal species than any other national park in the Albertine Rift. In addition to gorilla trekking, guests can trek for golden monkeys and see other primate species such as eastern chimpanzees, Angolan (black and white) colobus, blue monkeys, Dent’s mona monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, Hamlyn’s (owl-faced) monkeys, and olive baboons. After the sun sets, Bosman’s potto and the eastern needle-clawed bush babies emerge, adding a touch of nocturnal mystery to the park’s ambience. Other mammals include bongo, giant forest hog, Alexander’s and Thomas’ squirrels, aquatic civet, giant forest genet, Maclaud’s horseshoe bat, and Rwenzori otter shrew.

Bird watching in Kahuzi-Biega

Kahuzi-Biega hosts about 350 bird species, of which at least 42 are endemic to the region. Notable sightings include grey parrot, Shelley’s crimsonwing, Congo peafowl, Grauer’s and African green broadbill, Grauer’s swamp warbler, Rockefeller’s sunbird, yellow-crested helmetshrike, Albertine owlet, and the white-naped pigeon.
