Areas visited

Victoria Falls:

The world-famous Victoria Falls - Africa's adventure capital - marks the spot where the mighty Zambezi River gathers its strength and tumbles into a series of dramatic gorges 100 metres below - the single largest continuous falling curtain of water in the world. The neighbouring town of Victoria Falls is a thriving tourism hub easily accessed by road, rail or air. Just wandering the streets of this quaint town is a memorable experience as you negotiate for souvenirs, dodge warthogs (and elephants!), hang out with locals and sample a range of restaurants and bars.

The falls are also officially known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) in the local Lozi language – a name that perfectly captures the almost mystical atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage Site (also listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World).

During your visit to this area, you will stay at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, just 4km from Victoria Falls. This sunset-facing lodge is perched on a plateau, offering breathtaking views of pristine bushveld. The lodge overlooks a wildlife-rich waterhole, where you can often spot elephant, buffalo, kudu, waterbuck, impala, and various bird species. The lodge boasts a two-tiered swimming pool, and the fine-dining MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant, with each room overlooking Zambezi National Park.

Chobe Riverfront:

Chobe Riverfront (Serondela area) in the north-eastern corner of Chobe National Park is the most popular part of the park and is easily accessible from the nearby town of Kasane. This waterfront area attracts massive herds of elephants and buffaloes in the dry season, offering fantastic photographic opportunities as they bathe and drink in the late afternoon sunlight. Chobe National Park is at the centre of an enormous protected area in the northeastern corner of Botswana that acts as a vital wildlife link between Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia.

Wildlife includes four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – only rhinos are absent), many antelope species (including the only population of puku in Botswana), zebras, giraffes and good populations of cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs, as well as a plethora of smaller species such as serval, aardwolf, pangolin, aardvark and bat-eared fox. Birding in northern Chobe can be rewarding, with over 450 species.

During your visit to Chobe, you will stay at Chobe Bakwena Eco Lodge, a small owner-run lodge built on the banks of the Chobe River, just outside Chobe National Park.

Itinerary

After arriving at Victoria Falls Airport, you will be met by your AG representative holding a signboard with your name, who will take you on a short road transfer to Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

First, spend some time winding down at the lodge, and enjoy panoramic views of Zambezi National Park. Later in the afternoon, head out for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. You'll witness the breathtaking beauty of the sun setting on tranquil waters as you relax on the gently flowing Zambezi River upstream of the Falls. Aboard a comfortable river cruise, drink in hand, you will be able to bid farewell to your first day on the Africa continent.

Enjoy dinner at the MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant (included). This full day ends back at your lodge, where sleep should come easily.

Overnight at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in a waterhole-facing room

After an early breakfast this morning, you will be picked up at 08:15 for a guided tour of Victoria Falls and surrounding rainforest. Explore the majestic beauty of the Falls from various viewing decks. You will witness the captivating cascade of Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) as it plunges with tremendous force into the gorges below, creating clouds of mist. The mesmerising display of mist, rainbows, and sheer natural power creates a mystical atmosphere at this UNESCO World Heritage Site (also listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World).

Lunch is included today at the MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.

You will be transferred to The Boma Restaurant in the evening, where a unique dinner and entertainment await. The Boma is a unique cultural experience filled with eating and entertainment. Prepare to have your senses bombarded with the tastes, sights, sounds and smells of Africa, blended with the warmth and hospitality of the Zimbabwean people. While you dine, entertainment includes Shangaan dancers, singers, face painters and witch doctors. The more adventurous amongst you will be showing off their dance moves and drumming away on traditional African drums. The selection of four-course traditional Zimbabwean dishes is mouth-watering. If mopane worms and crocodile tail are not your thing, settle instead for venison stews, beef, pork, fish and chicken or a variety of vegetarian options.

Overnight at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in a waterhole-facing room

After a leisurely breakfast, have a strong cup of coffee to kick-start your senses. You'll be collected from the hotel lobby for an adrenaline-filled helicopter ride over Victoria Falls known as the ‘Flight of Angels’. David Livingstone famously wrote on seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855 that “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. The best way to appreciate the true splendour of Victoria Falls is to view them from the air.

Back on terra firma you will be collected and returned to your lodging for the rest of the day at leisure.

Today, you can enjoy a 'Vulture Culture' experience at the MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant, where you'll witness the spectacular sight of hundreds of vultures swooping down and feeding. This supplementary feeding program aids the survival of these remarkable endangered birds.

Enjoy dinner at the MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant (included).

This morning, after breakfast, it is time to check out, after which you will head to Chobe Bakwena Lodge via road transfer. You will be transferring into Botswana via a border crossing, so please have your passports and the required documents ready.

In Chobe, land and water-based activities will give you access to an area with excellent game viewing. Chobe is well known for its predators and is home to massive elephant herds.

While staying at Bakwena Lodge, you will have the opportunity to meet the people of Botswana, visit schools, go on village tours, and get to know real Africa while enjoying its abundant wildlife. A sundowner cruise to the meeting place of four countries (the only one in the world), should also make it onto your to-do list.

A typical day at Bakwena:

  • 05:00: Personal wake-up call

  • 05:30: Light continental breakfast

  • 06:00 – 10:30: Morning game drive (return time varies based on sightings)

  • 11:30: Leisurely lunch

  • 12:30 – 14:30: Relaxation time (read, snooze, swim, wander, bird watch, lounge)

  • 14:30/15:00: Afternoon tea with light bites

  • 15:00 – 18:30: Afternoon game viewing as the sun sets

  • 19:00/19:30: Dinner accompanied by the sounds of the bush

Spend three nights at Chobe Bakwena Lodge

After a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to pack your belongings and bid farewell to the majestic Chobe River. Your transfer driver will meet you in the lobby to take you to Kasane Airport for your onward flight.
