Areas visited

Eastern Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest national park, situated on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert in the north-western corner of Zimbabwe, bordering Botswana.

Hwange features the Big 5 (although black rhinos are rarely seen, and white rhinos can only be seen at the Ngamo Rhino Sanctuary) and large herds of buffaloes and elephants. Wild dogs, lions, and substantial elephant herds are frequently seen in the park. Visitors also enjoy regular sightings of cheetah, roan and sable antelope. Evening drives can be very rewarding, with good sightings of aardvark and aardwolf.

Habitats include Kalahari scrub, teak and mopane woodlands, granite hills and salt pans – resulting in over 400 species of birds. Hwange is also known for unique natural features like the seeps of Nehimba and Shakwanki, where animals dig for water.

Itinerary

Arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport, where you will be greeted by your guide, Alison Nicholls. Enjoy a scenic 2.5-hour road transfer to Hwange Safari Lodge in Eastern Hwange National Park. After check-in, meet Alison for a brief art demonstration on sketching wildlife using simple shapes. Dinner and overnight stay at Hwange Safari Lodge.

After breakfast, visit the Painted Dog Conservation Centre near Hwange Safari Lodge, where you’ll learn about endangered wild dogs. Following the visit, enjoy lunch before boarding the Elephant Express for a unique game-viewing train-transfer to Bomani Tented Lodge. Arrive at the lodge and check-in, followed by dinner. A night drive may be scheduled.

Each day will be a blend of early morning and afternoon game drives, focusing on wildlife sketching opportunities. In addition to your game drives, Alison will guide you through informal sketching workshops. The private vehicle allows you to stay at sightings as long as you wish. You’ll have the chance to observe the wildlife while developing your artistic skills. Evenings will include group discussions and more art practice. Dinner and overnight stays at Bomani Tented Lodge.

After breakfast, enjoy a final game drive before your return rail and road journey to Victoria Falls. This concludes your art safari with lasting memories and new artistic skills.
