HANDCRAFTED EXPERIENTIAL SAFARIS

Trust us to find you the rarest animals, the most spectacular wildlife events, the remotest landscapes and deeply meaningful cultural encounters!

Why visit Khwai?

Khwai is sandwiched between two of northern Botswana’s world-famous parks: Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve (which includes the Okavango Delta). No fences restrict animal movements between these protected areas, so the wildlife viewing experience in Khwai is equal to the spectacular standards of anywhere in northern Botswana, possibly even more so due to its ideal geographic positioning.

Big cats, wild dogs and other wildlife

Predators are plentiful, with excellent lion, leopard, hyena and wild dog sightings, whilst cheetahs are seen regularly in the open plains, as are serval at night. Large herds of buffalo regularly stream through the waters on their way to fresh grazing grounds, and there is an elephant around every corner.

Khwai Private Reserve or Khwai Community Concession?

Khwai Private Reserve is a private 200,000-hectare concession bordering and to the north of the smaller community-owned Khwai Community Concession in the eastern fringes of the Okavango Delta and adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. The private reserve only permits guests booked into a handful of lodges, so guaranteeing an exclusive safari, whereas the community concession has more lodges and permits self-drivers and mobile safari operators.

Khwai's stunning landscapes

The landscape varies between dense mopane woodland, riverine forest, acacia woodland, seasonal waterholes and winding Khwai River channels. Much of the northern portion of Khwai Private Reserve is remote, with low or no tourist presence.

Bird watching

Northern Botswana plays host to about 450 bird species, including western banded snake-eagle, pennant-winged nightjar, collared palm-thrush, brown firefinch, slaty egret, African skimmer, pygmy goose, rock pratincole and African finfoot.

Why Khwai is a responsible safari choice

Your Africa Geographic safari to Khwai contributes directly to the conservation of the park to the benefit of local people because:

  • Khwai Community Concession is community-owned and so generates revenue directly from tourism by way of lease fees earned from lodges and campsites

  • We donate a portion of every safari sold to selected conservation efforts at ground level.

  • Your safari supports our conservation publishing efforts, which educate the world about Khwai and other threatened ecosystems.

  • Our chosen lodges support local community initiatives, ensuring that tourism benefits the nearby villages directly. They also adhere to strict environmental practices, such as limited vehicle numbers and sustainable camp operations, which help protect the ecosystem.

Travel in Africa is about knowing when and where to go, and with whom. A few weeks too early/late or a few kilometres off course, and you could miss the greatest show on Earth. And wouldn’t that be a pity?
