Tanda Tula Safari Camp is an intimate owner-run tented safari camp in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger National Park. The camp is situated on the banks of the Nhlaralumi riverbed, deep inside the park. The camp consists of 12 secluded tented suites each with their own private viewing deck high above the often dry river bed, with views across the Kruger.
The communal area at Tanda Tula consists of a large thatched building overlooking the river bed, the green lawn and swimming pool, and beyond to a waterhole that attracts daily wildlife. Inside the open-plan building is a large lounge area filled with a good selection of comfortable couches and chairs. An indoor fireplace provides welcome warmth to the lounge and library area during those chilly winter evenings. There is a large wooden viewing deck and safari-style bar, for those lazy early afternoons before the next batch of delicious cakes arrive!
The large swimming pool has a row of sun loungers looking out across an active waterhole – the ideal place to relax and catch up on some reading. Off to the side of the camp is the outdoor boma where guests can sit around the fire at night or enjoy a meal under the stars, and be entertained by singing and dancing lodge staff.
Each of the 12 luxury tented suites at Tanda Tula has a private viewing deck looking out across the river and beyond to the Kruger. The front of the main tent rolls open to let in the breeze and provide unobstructed views while you lie in bed. The bedroom houses a large comfortable bed with stand up fans, bedside lighting and plug points. The en-suite bathroom houses a Victorian-style bathtub with a washbasin and a flushing toilet. The tented suites also include a private outdoor shower.
Tanda Tula Safari Camp offers a wide range of safari activities that cater for all type of guests. The camp runs both morning and evening game drives conducted in large open-air 4×4 vehicles with each vehicle holding up to six guests. The camp also provides an animal tracking experience, guided walking safaris, stargazing, birdwatching and bush picnics. Tanda Tula is in a Big 5 area – with regular sightings of lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes and many other species.
For those seeking just a bit more privacy and adventure, Tanda Tula offers a ‘star-bed’ – a tree-house bedroom some distance from the camp. You will be dropped off at the private star bed in the evening, and picked up the following morning. Your stay in the star bed includes a romantic sundowner drink followed by a moon-lit dinner. You will sleep high up and safe from predators and things that go bump in the night. Your bed is as comfortable as those back in the camp, and a mosquito net protects you from pesky insects. The treehouse has a toilet and hand-basin. You will be collected the next morning, and taken back to the main camp to freshen up. This is a wonderful, romantic and very memorable twist to any safari.
